2004 USI Merit Award in Painting

SHORT BIO
When I was a kid, my dysfunctional family moved around the midwest a lot. We spent time in Kentucky, Indiana, Arkansas, and Missouri before settling down in the Hoosier state. To this day, I can still remember scribbling, smudging, and tracing the pages of a Winnie the Pooh activity book while my mom made blackberry jam and zuchinni bread. Those endless summers in Arkansas, drawing and coloring, helped shape my love for art and guided the overall direction of my work. Only having a handful of minor artistic victories in elementary school, junior high, and high school, I basically gave up pursuing art as a career after graduation. A couple of years later, at some dead end retail job, a coworker encouraged me to enroll at a local college. Long story short, I earned my Bachelors of Science in Studio Art from the University of Southern Indiana in 2004 as a non-traditional student. Since then, my work has been seen in Juxtapoz and Hi Fructose magazines as well as various art venues in Chicago, New York, Indiana, Kentucky, Wisconsin, and the country of Wales. Collectors from all over the world have purchased my work and that always blows me away when I think about it. Currently, I live and work in Evansville, Indiana with my girlfriend Jeannie (who is a phenomenal artist) along with our two cats Roosevelt and Lincoln.

ARTIST STATEMENT
“In order to correctly define art, it is necessary, first of all, to cease to consider art as a means to pleasure and to consider it as one of the conditions of human life”  ~  Leo Tolstoy

Tolstoy's philosophy on art has always resonated with me and allows me to quote a Nobel Prize laureate despite never reading any of his books. Leo explains the mysterious cliché aspects of art without complicating things. Art is just a natural part of our human experience. I believe everyone has a "sense of art" in the same way we have a sense of humor. We get to decide what's interesting or amusing to us. That amusement helps build connections with each other. And those connections are conjured by the slightly to especially familiar aesthetics seen in my artwork. Heavily influenced by cartoons, comic books, craft art, junk art, assemblage, graffiti, and collage, I meld together traditional and nontraditional materials into my own eco-conscious style of upcycled art that I fondly refer to as a "slop-surrealism". Experimenting with common objects, repurposing the discarded, attaching my own brand of imagery, and themes helps create an amusing connection between me and my audience. Regardless of Tolstoy's brilliance, it has always been a pleasure in trying capture the imagination of other people and share my lifelong condition of being an artist.
