SHORT BiO
In the 1970’s my family was a pack of poor nomadic hillbillies trying to figure out life and we moved around the Midwest a lot. We spent time in Kentucky, Indiana, Arkansas, and Missouri before settling down in the Hoosier state. Some of my most memorable summers were in Arkansas where my mom would make blackberry jam in the kitchen and I'd be scribbling, smudging, and tracing Winnie the Pooh in some activity book. I think those modest summers of endlessly drawing and coloring helped shape my love for illustration and guided the overall direction of my artwork. After a few minor artistic victories in elementary school, junior high, and high school, I basically gave up pursuing art after graduation in 1994. At some dead end retail job, a coworker encouraged me to enroll at a local college. Long story short, I received my Bachelors of Science in Studio Art from the University of Southern Indiana a decade later in 2004 as a non-traditional art student. My work has been seen in both Juxtapoz and Hi Fructose magazines as well as various art venues in Chicago, New York, Indiana, Kentucky, and most recently Wales. Collectors from the UK, Australia, France, and all over the United States have purchased my artwork. It's always very humbling when someone appreciates what I do and is willing to spend their hard-earned money on something I created. Currently, I work and live in Evansville, Indiana with my girlfriend Jeannie (who is also a tremendous artist) and our two cats Roosevelt and Lincoln.
ARTiST STATEMENT
“In order to correctly define art, it is necessary, first of all, to cease to consider art as a means to pleasure and to consider it as one of the conditions of human life”.
That has always resonated with me and lets me quote Tolstoy despite never reading any of his books. His words resonate with me and help explain the less cliché aspects of being an artist without complicating things or sounding pretentious. Art is just a part of who we are; it’s part of human life. Piggy-backing Tolstoy's philosophy, I think everyone has a sense of art in the same way we have a sense of humor. We personally decide what we consider interesting or amusing. Those interesting and amusing moments are where small connections are made between people, between the artist and the audience. Building on those small connections, I try to mimic the aesthetics of the same illustrative style of art that I loved as a kid and still admire to this day. I use traditional mediums and materials along with non-traditional elements like skateboards, paint can lids, salvaged wood, cardboard, plastic novelty eyes, spray paint cans, vintage blue prints, old receipts, vinyl records, scrap metal, an basically anything that I feel will help me make sense out of this chaotic world we live in through experimentation, repetition, and consistent compositions and found throughout my life's work. Recognizing those things and seeing common objects, seems to bridge the gap between me and my audience more. It forms a story and compliments, or contrasts the imagery. I’m influenced mostly by art and artists from the last 100 years in trying to create my own personal style and approach while exploring cartoons, comic books, craft art, junk art, assemblage, graffiti, and collage.
